Across Canada, communities are facing the dual crisis of rising housing costs and the disappearance of accessible, inclusive spaces. And while headlines may differ from province to province, the underlying challenges \u2013\u00a0displacement, disinvestment, and inaction \u2013\u00a0are all too familiar. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Take Qu\u00e9bec for example, a province where the housing crisis is made especially visible each year through a long-standing tradition.<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Every year on July 1st, a uniquely Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois ritual unfolds: Le Jour des d\u00e9m\u00e9nagements, or <\/strong><\/span>Moving Day<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/strong> Originally designed to avoid uprooting school-aged children mid-year, it has become a striking symbol of housing precarity<\/strong>. On this day, tens of thousands of leases expire across the province \u2013\u00a0sending renters scrambling to move, often with few <\/span> affordable options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In 2024, that precarity reached new heights. <\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The provincial rental board recommended a rent increase of <\/strong><\/span>5.9%<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the highest in decades. Actual rent hikes, especially in units with turnover, are even higher. Evictions across Qu\u00e9bec have <\/strong><\/span>increased six-fold<\/a><\/strong><\/span> since 2020 \u2013 and that\u2019s only counting reported evictions. In response, housing advocates recently launched a province-wide \u201c<\/span>week of action<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u201d, including the occupation of a vacant, city-owned building that had been promised for social housing \u2013 but still sits empty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Public programs for social housing have been defunded, and few new options have replaced them.<\/b> Communities are left wondering: <\/span>What tools do we actually have?<\/span><\/em> That\u2019s where Brique par Brique comes in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
