We’re excited to welcome Joy Duncan to the Tapestry Community Capital team! Based in Toronto, Joy joins us as an Investment Associate, where she will ensure clients have the documents and systems needed to raise community bond investments and manage investor repayments.
Joy brings a wealth of exper
ience in finance, accounting, and technology. She holds her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and worked at Grant Thornton LLP, specializing in cloud accounting and audit. She has also worked with nonprofits to streamline financial reporting processes, helping them leverage new technology for greater efficiency. Before joining Tapestry, Joy worked with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation in London, England, where she collaborated with the International Accounting Standards Board and the International Sustainability Standards Board to advance global digital reporting standards.
What drew Joy to Tapestry? The opportunity to work with an organization that empowers communities through finance. She’s particularly excited about Tapestry’s grassroots approach. “It’s not just about raising funds,” Joy says, “it’s about helping organizations set their own terms and engaging a diverse range of community members in the process.”
Joy finds the flexibility that community bonds offer especially appealing, particularly for nonprofits with limited resources. “For many nonprofits, navigating traditional financing can be challenging — whether it’s due to constantly changing requirements, restrictions on the use of funds, or time-consuming applications. Community bonds offer a much-needed solution.”
Outside of work, Joy is always up for learning something new. She’s currently taking impact reporting courses to deepen her knowledge of the social finance sector. When she’s not studying, you can find her trying new sports like soccer, swimming, or ping pong. She’s also working her way through the Penguin 100 Must-Read Classics list, indulging her love for reading.
